Total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) is an anesthetic technique that makes the use of drugs only through the intravenous route. This appearance of modality is growing in veterinary medicine due to new drugs with pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics properties that allow its use in longer anesthetic procedures, giving more cardiorespiratory safety when compared to inhalation anesthesia. The goal of TIVA is to give the animal muscle relaxation, analgesia, and hypnosis during the anesthetic procedure, and may be administered as an intermittent bolus, bolus associated with continuous infusion, continuous intravenous infusion, and target-controlled infusion. The present study presents the activities developed in veterinary anesthesiology for the obligatory supervised stage carried out at the Harmonia Veterinary Hospital (HVH) and at the Veterinary Anesthesiology Service of the Veterinary Hospital of the Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics School of UNESP - Campus de Botucatu. Also presenting a literature review on Total Intravenous Anesthesia, demonstrating concepts, main anesthetic drugs used and their effects on the animal's organism. Such reviews present the understanding of TIVA as a safe anesthetic technique, practical and applicable in any surgical procedure proposed to the animal.
